Coach Zee’s Philosophy

I coach to develop individual players who contribute to their team: strong in the mind, smart in their decisions, skilled with the ball, and confident in the box.

Through key frameworks and whole-player care, I guide young athletes toward courage, intelligence, technical excellence, and leadership.

My goal is to grow not just better soccer and futsal players, but resilient, respectful, heart-centered humans who believe in themselves and each other.

  • This is where everything begins: the mindset pillar.

Players who choose Fire Mode play brave, focused, and determined responding to mistakes with effort, not emotion. Players stuck in Fear Mode shrink, freeze, or quit before the next chance comes.

    • Fire Mode = brave, focused, resilient players (continue gameplay)

    • Fear Mode = overwhelmed, emotional, hesitant players (disrupt gameplay)

Mission: Teach children how to reset, recover, and choose courage over panic using “the switch.”

I help them learn that their mind controls their game, and that bravery is a skill.

  • Welcome to the second pillar: Soccer IQ.

Soccer is not a chaotic sport built on individual play; it’s a thinking sport built on how individuals playing work together.

Smart Soccer players spread out, communicate, move off the ball, and make good decisions: when to pass, when to dribble, where to run, and how to support. Sloppy Soccer players chase the ball, bunch up, and react instead of anticipating.

    • Smart Soccer = spacing, scanning, movement, decision-making (clean gameplay)

    • Sloppy Soccer = bunching, ball-chasing, panicking, not watching the field (hectic gameplay)

Mission: Develop players who understand why, where, and when, not just how.

I help players understand that choices matter as much as their skills. Often, choices are what determines the score at the end of the game.

  • Introducing the third pillar: field player technical skills.

Every player needs a technical toolbox: dribbling, first touch, passing, striking, receiving, shielding, changing direction, and staying calm under pressure.

Having Strong Feet means having confidence, control, and technique; skills built through repetition, coaching, and effort. Having Shaky Feet usually means rushing, panicking, or lacking practice time (built through repetition, dismissing coaching, or lack of effort).

    • Strong Legs = controlled, confident, prepared, focused on using skills to create opportunities

    • Shaky Legs = rushed, unfocused, unpracticed, focused on using skills to show off

Mission: Build athletes who trust their technique because they’ve trained for it.

I help athletes understand that building their toolbox is an essential part of growth, which can be accomplished both independently and in collaboration with others.

  • Finally, the fourth pillar: Goalkeeping and Leadership

Goalkeeping is a unique blend of bravery, communication, and decision-making.

Keepers who Own the Box play assertively and are aware: stepping up with confidence, taking command of their space, communicating clearly with teammates, and choosing courage even when the moment feels big. Keepers who Fear the Box hesitate, stay quiet, or freeze under pressure, often reacting late or feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of the position.

    • Own the Box = brave, commanding, proactive with strong positioning and angles, uses hands and body, and good distribution

    • Fear the Box = hesitant, unfocused, reactive, uses only feet, stuck on the goal line

Mission: Develop goalkeepers who lead with confidence, courage, and clarity.

Keepers aren’t just players; they’re anchors of the team.

  • “Coach Nikki builds a foundation and helped our child grow technically, tactically, and emotionally. We were grateful for a coach who understands that youth sports should prepare kids for the future, not just how to take orders from the sidelines.”

  • “What truly sets Coach Nikki apart is her belief that goalkeepers deserve real coaching! We’ve never seen a coach invest in keeper growth like this, and the difference on and off the field has been incredible.”

  • "What impressed us most was how different of a coach she was to those we'd had in the past. She made an effort to know the kids and the parents. She has been the only coach my kids have wanted to hug and have coach them again."

  • "Coach Zee helped our child understand the game, not just play it! Yes, they can learn a lot from playing. But as parents, we want someone to help our child connect the dots while still letting him have fun."

The Top 5 Things I Look For In Players

  1. Coachability – I look for players who are willing to listen, try again, and apply feedback, even when it’s hard. Coachable players don’t need to be perfect; they need to be open to learning and growth.

  2. Mindset Under Pressure – I look for how a player responds when things don’t go their way. Effort after mistakes, resilience during tough moments, and the ability to flip from Fear Mode to Fire Mode matter more than any single play.

  3. Willingness to Compete – I look for brave players. Those who step into challenges, who don’t shy away from contact, and who keep working even when the game gets physical or uncomfortable. Competing with courage is a skill.

  4. Growth Over Time – More than where a player starts, I look for improvement across the season. Effort, consistency, and small wins add up. Players who grow (technically, tactically, and emotionally) are the ones laying the foundation for long-term success.

  5. Wants to be There – I value players who genuinely want to be at practice and at games. Those who are engaged, curious, and invested in the team. Players who “want to be there” naturally connect with teammates, stay switched on, and develop soccer IQ faster because they care about the why, not just the how.

Coaching & Coaching Education Experience

Frequently Asked Questions

These are the questions I get asked most when it comes to me, my experience, and my perspective. Dig in!

  • I actually began my coaching journey as a gymnastics coach way back in 1997! I coached elementary-aged competitive gymnasts on multiple apparatus, including floor, beam, vault, and bars. For many years, I was also a recreational league cheerleading coach, thanks to my background as a JV and Varsity Cheerleader and dance team member at Troy State University.

However, soccer and futsal coaching came later (beginning in Fall 2023) after I had my own children. I have loved this sport ever since!

  • At the recreational level: I have head coached full seasons of 8U outdoor soccer and futsal, 10U outdoor soccer and futsal, and 12U futsal through AYSO Region 498. These were either boys’ teams or co-ed teams.

At the Club level, I have been an assistant coach and team manager for 10U boys, as well as a dedicated Keeper Trainer for 8U-12U keepers (boys and girls), through AYSO United Alabama.

  • I have a 7v7 license (online) through the USSF (US Soccer Federation). I am also certified to coach 8U-12U outdoor or futsal through AYSO. In addition, I have received my full soccer certification (mindset, player development, coach-mentorship) through Soldiers to Sidelines, a military-connected nonprofit.

I keep updated certifications through SafeSport, in addition to up-to-date training on Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Concussion Awareness, and Mandatory Reporting.
